rustle : (n), a soft noise. (v), to move or work quickly and energetically, to find and bring together things and people, quickly. to steal (livestock). to forage(food).

russell market: established 1927. shivaji nagar. bangalore. wholesale mart and retail market for fruit, vegetable, meat, fish poultry, flowers, butter and toys.

What would it be like, if Russell market had its own TV channel?

A market posed as a microcosm of the real world; over which was forced the conditions of a ‘utopia’.

The people of the market became the clients, the stars and the primary audience for this media channel.

A crew consisting of students acquired ‘video skills’ as programming was rapidly generated on-site.

Open locations and processes of production came full circle as Rustle TV went ‘on air’ over three days inside the market.

Twelve TV sets were cabled to receive feed from two desks that functioned as an open studio. A 2-way screen was added in the central aisle of the market.

Video became both open site and container, for a feedback mechanism of shared memories and experiences.

Rustle TV: done quickly, with speed. Gave market a manifesto, did market research, met every shopkeeper, learned requisite video and editing skills, generated a footage bank, made over 20 films and promos. In 15 days.

Rustle TV: a gentle breeze. an ‘ambient’ intervention. No commerce, no authorship... high level of participation and control over media. No advertising is generated even though this service is available.

Rustle TV tech: Cheap analog video switcher/ mixer, broadcast via cable TV.Live TV jamming, pirated feature films, vcd’s. Remixed Mp3s and videos.

Rustle TV Live : portraitures, short features, dance-remixes, film spoofs, talent shows, poetry and singing.  Live events - a quiz programme, a checkers tournament,  an open forum, an open stage.
